Enclosed Dog Parks in the City of SLO (last update: 10/21/23)

Location: Laguna Lake Park

Size: About 3 acres

Status: Final Design approved by Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC; August, 2023); Estimated costs around $1.9 million; Available funds around $1.1 million; PRC considered reduced project ($1.4 million) but directed staff to pursue original design moving forward; if additional funding not authorized by Council, staff will need to consider alternatives (e.g., reduced improvements, work with outside groups to help offset some costs, break project out to complete ‘essential’ items now with existing funding and ‘important’ items funded at a later time, etc.).

Next step: Take Final Design to City Council to authorize funding; as of September 1, 2023, no Council date yet set.

Construction start date: Once Council approves funding, construction proposals to follow; construction would then start shortly after bid accepted, which could be early to mid 2024.

Proposed Amenities: Full perimeter fencing; interior fencing to create two separate areas for small dogs and large dogs; all-weather surfaces (grass, mulch/wood chips, decomposed granite); shading (built structures and trees); water stations; benches; tables; grading to improve drainage; entry and walkways to be ADA compliant. Existing amenities include a bathroom and parking lot.
